President Murmu Extends a Ceremonial Welcome to Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam

During his first state visit to India, President Droupadi Murmu formally welcomed Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam on Thursday in the courtyard of Rashtrapati Bhavan. At the event, President Tharman received a Guard of Honor. He later visited Rajghat to honor Mahatma Gandhi.

After the ceremony, President Tharman met with a number of dignitaries and examined the ceremonial Guard of Honor. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, members of his cabinet, and a number of other well-known individuals graced the event. President Tharman and his spouse, Jane Yumiko Ittogi, arrived in New Delhi for a five-day stay.
President Tharman emphasized the notable advancements in India-Singapore relations since Singapore’s independence in 1965 at a media appearance. After establishing a comprehensive strategic alliance, which was declared during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Singapore in September, he underlined that the two nations are now embarking on a new course. He described India and Singapore as natural partners, focusing on stability and exploring opportunities in the digital domain.
It is noteworthy that President Tharman Shanmugaratnam is on a state visit to India from January 14 to 18, accompanied by a high-level delegation that includes ministers, parliamentarians, and senior officials. This marks his first visit to India as Singapore’s President.
During his stay, President Tharman will hold discussions with President Droupadi Murmu, and a banquet will be hosted in his honor at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. He is also scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, and several other Indian dignitaries. Additionally, President Tharman will visit Odisha on January 17-18.
