Kate Middleton’s Royal Marsden Visit: The Reason Behind Skipping Her Signature Accessory
Kate Middleton’s Emotional Hospital Visit: Why She Didn’t Wear Her Signature Engagement Ring
This week, during an emotional visit to a hospital in London where she received cancer treatment, Kate Middleton was seen without any extra accessories likely due to the nature of the engagement.
On January 14, the 43-year-old Princess of Wales made an unannounced visit to the Royal Marsden Hospital in Chelsea, London, revisiting the medical center where she had undergone private treatment in 2024. A detailed announcement about this visit was made that day. A Kensington Palace spokesperson stated, “The Princess wanted to express her gratitude to the incredible team while also highlighting the world-class care and treatment provided by the Royal Marsden.”
During this visit, Kate notably chose not to wear her engagement ring.
One of Princess Kate’s signature jewels is her sapphire and diamond engagement ring, which was formerly owned by her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. Kate has been known to remove the 18-carat ring when she visits the hospital, despite the fact that it is a visually significant addition. Many medical facilities have strict policies that require minimal jewelry and handwashing before entering wards. As she has done before, Kate took off her well-known engagement ring during her most recent visit to Royal Marsden.
Kate Middleton had an emotional trip to the hospital last year to receive treatment for cancer.
The Princess of Wales did not always wear her engagement ring in 2024, even for fashion reasons. These included an August video in which she congratulated Team Great Britain on their Olympic victory in Paris in 2024, and a Mother’s Day photo with her children, Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6.
In these instances, Kate opted for a stack of rings featuring a new eternity band. As seen in the video and in a later September announcement that she had completed chemotherapy, she wore her Welsh gold wedding ring, a white gold and diamond eternity band gifted by Prince William in 2013 after George’s birth, and another mysterious third ring featuring alternating gemstones and diamonds.
Lauren Kiehna, founder of The Court Jeweller blog, commented, “The ring Kate wore is undoubtedly a new addition to her jewelry collection. It’s a slender eternity-style band with alternating light and dark gemstones, creating a radiant look.”
She added, “Many eternity bands symbolize family relationships. Given the birthstones for her children ruby, emerald, and diamond it wouldn’t be surprising if the gemstones in the new ring were linked to George, Charlotte, and Louis.”
Is the engagement ring worn by Kate Middleton a recent fashion trend?
Kate wore her gorgeous engagement ring to several formal occasions in 2024, such as the Trooping the Colour in June (her first public appearance since the news of her cancer treatment), Wimbledon in July, and the December’s Together Christmas carol service. However, she didn’t wear it on her most recent trips, such the one she took with Prince William to Southport in October 2024. Instead, she decided to support a community in need by wearing her ring stack to casual gatherings like a yoga and dance class with a Taylor Swift theme.
Kate and Prince William were unveiled as joint patrons of the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust on the day of her visit to the city. Established in 1851, the Royal Marsden was the first hospital in the world devoted to the diagnosis, treatment, research, and education of cancer, and it received widespread praise for its outstanding medical care.
Royal Legacy: Princess Diana’s Connection to Royal Marsden
Prince William served as president of the Royal Marsden since 2007, a role previously held by his mother, Princess Diana. After her divorce from Charles in 1996, Diana retained her official role at the hospital, one of six causes she continued to support.
The Royal Marsden was one of Diana’s “favorite charities,” indicating her close connection to the organization. In June 1997, a charity sale of 80 of Diana’s clothes brought in money for the hospital. Two months later, in August 1997, she passed away tragically at the age of thirty-six.
Kate Middleton’s poignant visit highlights the Royal Marsden’s vital role in cancer care and the longstanding tradition of royal support for the hospital.
